Stepping Up The Virtual Memory

For the proper functioning of a system, sufficient amount of RAM should be installed. Without sufficient amount of RAM, running the programs will be a difficult task, as the programs would run slow and in some cases, the programs will not run at all. To increase the speed, the RAM has to be upgraded. However, the presence of virtual memory on the system can be increased according to user’s choice. By following the below provided Windows help guidelines, the virtual memory can be increased with ease.

Instructions

  • The Start button, quick launch icons and the notification area are housed in the taskbar. You have to select the Start button in order for the Start menu to pop up. From the menu, choose the Control Panel.
  • Now the Control Panel window will appear on screen. From the window, choose the option System And Maintenance and then click on System.
  • In the left side of the window, the option Advanced System Settings will be present and you need to select it. If a password is asked, you will have to enter the password.
  • In the System Properties window that appears, choose the tab by the name Advanced. In the Performance section, the Settings button will be present, select it. Now another Performance options window will appear on screen.
  • Now choose the tab displayed by the name Advanced and in the virtual memory section, choose the button Change and another window will appear.
  • The check box corresponding to Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives should be unchecked.
  • In the drive section, choose the drive that houses the operating system.
  • Below the Total Paging File Size For All Drives, the values for the Currently Allocated and Recommended Values must be noted. The Total Paging File Size For All Drives will be present towards the end of the virtual memory window.
  • The Customize Size option should be selected and a recommended value should be entered or a higher value has to be entered that is above the currently allocated value in order to increase the virtual memory.
  • Now click on the OK or Cancel button to exit the windows.
