Changing Windows XP Display To The Widescreen Mode

Using a wide screen monitor for your computer can be enthralling if you use your computer mostly for viewing pictures and watching movies and videos. Viewing in wide screen mode allows the users to see more things together with the additional horizontal space. The Windows XP operating system supports wide screen monitors but its default resolution is designed for non-widescreen monitors. This may make the view vertically squashed when you are using a wide screen monitor. To get the optimum viewing experience with a wide screen monitor, you will have to make some changes in the display settings. This can be done through the Control Panel. Instructions

  • Turn on the computer and wait until the operating system loads completely. Log into the Administrator account in the computer, click on the Start button on the bottom left hand corner of the screen. This will open the Start menu. 
  • From the Start menu, select Control Panel to open up a file explorer window. If the specific category files are hidden, click on the Appearance and Themes button followed by Change the Screen Resolution. If the category files are not hidden in the first place, click on the Display icon to open up an options window. After that, click on the Settings tab.
  • You will be able to locate the screen resolution-sliding bar at the mid-left of the menu. Move the cursor to this bar. Watch the rectangle marked 1 in the preview pane located above the sliding bar and move the marker to one of the widescreen resolution settings. 
  • After performing the above steps, click on the Apply button, wait until the computer screen blacks out, and reset to the new widescreen settings. After the flicker, the computer will adjust to the new settings.

Stepping Up The Virtual Memory

For the proper functioning of a system, sufficient amount of RAM should be installed. Instructions

  • The Start button, quick launch icons and the notification area are housed in the taskbar. You have to select the Start button in order for the Start menu to pop up. From the menu, choose the Control Panel.
  • Now the Control Panel window will appear on screen. From the window, choose the option System And Maintenance and then click on System.
  • In the left side of the window, the option Advanced System Settings will be present and you need to select it. If a password is asked, you will have to enter the password.
  • In the System Properties window that appears, choose the tab by the name Advanced. In the Performance section, the Settings button will be present, select it. Now another Performance options window will appear on screen.
  • Now choose the tab displayed by the name Advanced and in the virtual memory section, choose the button Change and another window will appear.
  • The check box corresponding to Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives should be unchecked.
  • In the drive section, choose the drive that houses the operating system.
  • Below the Total Paging File Size For All Drives, the values for the Currently Allocated and Recommended Values must be noted. The Total Paging File Size For All Drives will be present towards the end of the virtual memory window.
  • The Customize Size option should be selected and a recommended value should be entered or a higher value has to be entered that is above the currently allocated value in order to increase the virtual memory.
  • Now click on the OK or Cancel button to exit the windows.

Steps To Install Service Pack 1


“Why should I install the service pack 1?” I was bit skeptical about the service pack version 1. I managed to reach the help centre via the Windows support number and enquired about the Windows Service Pack 1. The guy helped me with the answer that the Windows Service Pack 1 was designed to enhance and boost the system performance as well as to make it run more securely. He asked me to follow the under mentioned steps to install the Service Pack 1.

Instructions

• Check the internet connectivity status. Make sure that your computer is connected to the internet while trying to install the internet service pack 1. Only if you have an active internet connection, you will be able to hook your computer with the internet. So, make sure that you have an active wireless or wired Internet connection, while downloading the Service Pack version 1.
• Launch the Start menu by clicking the Start orb placed on the bottom left corner of the home screen. Instead, you may launch the Start menu by pressing the key imprinted with the Windows logo. From the Start pop up, select the label that reads All Programs. The All Programs list will brief you the names of the programs installed in the computer.
• From the All Programs list, select the label that reads Windows Update.
• Now search for the link that reads Check for Updates. Click on the link that reads View Available Updates. From the dropdown, select the label that reads Service Pack for Microsoft Windows. Hit the Install option to install the update. If you are not signed in to your admin account, you will be prompted to enter your admin account password.
• Follow the instructions prompted by the installation wizard to install the software with ease. This will mostly consist of needing to select Next on a number of screens. The computer may restart a couple of times in between the installation process. This is normal and you need not get worried seeing this.
• Next, login to your admin account after the Setup has finished installing the update. You might receive the notification; update was successful, when you log back in. The process is now complete.
