System Restore Settings In Windows 7

Windows operating systems come with a handy feature called the ‘System Restore’. This feature allows you to easily backup all the system configurations and settings onto your hard drive. In case of data loss or system crashes, Windows restores your files and settings automatically or when prompted to by your operating system.
This feature works by saving the various important data in your computer as a system file. These files are referred to as System Restore points. Although this feature is handy in crucial situations, it consumes a large amount of your disk space. You can modify the system restore settings and get more disk space by following the below mentioned instructions from the Windows support team.

Instructions
  • Go to the Start menu and right-click on Computer. Select Properties from the popup menu.
  • In the Properties window, select System Protection option on the left hand side.
  • Each hard drive has various partitions. Each partition is labeled under a name with a specific drive letter. Select the partition for which you need to modify settings, and click the Configure button placed under the Protection Settings header.
  • Following are the various configuration settings you may choose:
  1. Restore system settings and previous versions of files - On clicking this button, Windows creates a fresh system restore point, which saves all your current settings and configuration. Note that this will not delete any previous restore points from the computer.
  2. Only restore previous versions of files - Doing this keeps all your previous restore points intact.
  3. Turn off system protection- Doing this stops windows from automatically setting up restore points on a regular basis. This is not recommended, as you may have issues with backing up important data in case of a system crash or a virus attack.
  • Windows provides you with the option to specify the amount of space that System Restore may use to save various restore points. To do this, adjust the slider below the Disk Space Usage header, to change the percentage of disk space that System Restore can consume.
  • Click the Delete button to delete all restore points saved in your system.
  • Finally click the OK button.
You may set a fresh restore point at any time your system is functioning properly. Always keep at least one such restore point saved in Windows. To get more information on creating system restore points, visit the Windows Support site and learn more tips.

Instructions
  • The first Windows XP troubleshooting step is to reboot your system. When the system reboots, press the function key F8 continuously during the startup process to launch the boot menu of the system.
  • When the boot menu appears, choose the Safe Mode with Networking option from it by moving the selection using the arrow keys in the keyboard and then press the Enter button. In this mode, only limited programs are loaded to the system that are essential for booting the system and will allow you to troubleshoot the system effectively.
  • Update the antivirus program installed in your system and then run a thorough full system scan for finding the infections in the system. If found any, remove the viruses as a virus loading at the startup will lead to the crashing of the system.
  • Open the Run window from the Start menu and type in msconfig into the textbox and press the Enter key.
  • The System Configuration window will open now. Go to the Startup tab in the window, now you will be able to see all the programs that load up in the startup of the system.
  • Now browse through the programs and uncheck the check mark beside the program that you do not wish to boot while the system boots up. Take utter care while unmarking the boxes beside the programs. If you are not sure whether it is needed or not, then it is better to leave it marked.
  • Now move to the Services tab and click on the check box beside Hide all Microsoft Services. Now you can see all the services from third party software that are loading while startup.
  • Like the programs, uncheck the boxes beside the services that you do not wish to load during startup. If you are not sure whether some services are essential for running programs, then leave them as it is so that no harm is done to the system applications and other installed programs in the computer.
  • Press the OK button to save the changes that you have made in the startup menu and system configuration while performing the Windows XP troubleshooting.
  • Now close all the windows and restart the system in normal mode. You can see that the system will boot faster and perform better with startup changes.
If you follow the simple steps given above, you can easily fix the system-crashing problem in the Windows XP computer.
